Kabootar Khaneh: A Villa Designed for Coexistence with Birds

Creating a Space for Humans and Birds to Live Harmoniously

The Kabootar Khaneh, designed by Nima Keivani, is a unique villa that aims to create a space for coexistence between humans and birds. Inspired by Iranian historical dovecotes, this design offers a new perspective on biophilic architecture.

The concept behind the Kabootar Khaneh was to create a space where humans and birds can live side by side. After observing the widespread presence of birds in the project site, the architecture team decided to design a house that would allow people to coexist with these creatures. Taking inspiration from traditional Iranian dovecotes, a part of the interior space was dedicated to creating a patio-like area using glass material, providing transparency and connection with the surrounding nature. The interior spaces are carefully arranged around this central patio, creating a harmonious living environment for both humans and birds.

What sets the Kabootar Khaneh apart is its innovative approach to biophilic architecture. While architects have always considered the use of plants, light, and water in their designs, this villa takes it a step further by incorporating birds into the equation. The dedicated space for birds inside the house allows for more interaction and engagement with nature. By creating cross-sectional play and level differences in the spaces, as well as designing unique stairs and holes, the architects have successfully integrated the needs of both humans and birds.

The realization of the Kabootar Khaneh involved the use of sustainable materials and techniques. The facade and sloping roof are made from recycled wood sourced from old buildings in the area, while the landscaping features sedimentary rocks collected from the village. The sloping roof, hidden behind the walls, maintains the minimalist and cubic form of the building. Rainwater is collected on the roof surface and used for irrigation purposes, further emphasizing the sustainable approach of the design.

The Kabootar Khaneh boasts a total built area of 210 square meters, with a ground floor area of 67 square meters. The height of the building reaches 10.6 meters, providing ample space for both humans and birds to thrive.

Designed by Nima Keivani and Sina Keivani of Keivani Architects, the Kabootar Khaneh showcases their dedication to creating innovative and sustainable designs. The project was completed in September 2018 in Tehran, Iran.

The Kabootar Khaneh has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2021. This prestigious award acknowledges the creativity and resourcefulness of the design, which contributes to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.

The Kabootar Khaneh is a testament to the possibilities of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. Through thoughtful design and innovative ideas, this villa offers a unique living experience that embraces the beauty of both the built and natural environments.
